Pevensey Castle, Sussex, 1872. 'On the flat coast of Pevensey Bay, where the Norman conquerors landed, Sept. 28, 1066, are the ruins of the castle built by Robert de Mortain, Duke William's half-brother, within the lines of the ancient Roman fortress of Anderida. It afterwards belonged to the Norman family of De Aquila, and then fell to the Crown, but is now the property of the Duke of Devonshire. The Roman walls, 12 ft. thick, are built of flint and hard cement, with a facing of squared stones and coping or bonding of red tiles. They are from 24 ft. to 30 ft. high, strengthened with solid buttress towers, and inclose a space of twelve acres. The Norman castle, surrounded by those more ancient walls, was rebuilt at the end of the thirteenth century'. From "Illustrated London News", 1872.
