Légende
Coin (drachm) of Paros, about 500 BC. Additional Info: The obverse of this coin depicts a goat, kneeling right with its forelegs lowered and its head raised. The reverse is stamped with a quadripartite incuse square (four-part stamped square), which suggests that the coin is of late Archaic date. This coin comes from a hoard discovered in Paros in 1936 or 1937. The Paros hoard included 100 to 200 drachmas stamped with goats, confirming this coin type as Parian. The fifth-century BC poet Simonides mentions this coin type in an epigram, citing a statue of Artemis that was purchased with "200 drachmas of Paros stamped with the image of a goat."
