Spring, about 1865. 'I see a hand you cannot see, Which beckons me away. I hear a voice you cannot hear, Which fondly whispers "Stay".' Portrait of a young woman, wearing a loose-fitting, flowing dress, standing in profile in front of a wall of flowers. She holds on to a flower-covered vine as she gazes upward towards the top of the wall. Pioneering British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron is considered to be one of the most important portraitists of the 19th century. She took up photography at the age of 48, after her daughter gave her a camera as a present.
