'Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth', c1929. Walter Raleigh '...attracted the attention and won the admiration of Queen Elizabeth [I]. He had much in appearance and manner to recommend him to Royal favour...He was...tall, well built, of a good presence, "with thick dark hair, a bright complexion, and an expression full of life. His dress, too, was at all times magnificent"...Such a man would make every appeal to Queen Elizabeth. It would be just like him to lay his cloak at her feet, and just like her to appreciate the gallantry of the act. Certain it was that Raleigh's favour with the Queen was immediate and substantial, and but a few years sufficed to make him one of the wealthiest men at Court. In 1584 he was knighted'. From "Heroic Deeds of Great Men", by C. Sheridan Jones and Alfred Miles, illustrated by Howard Davie and Harry Payne [Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, London, c1929]
