'Message Was Received Of The Outbreak At Meerut', c1929. 'The year 1857 startled the world with the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, and [Lord Roberts], the Hero of Kandahar..., a young man of twenty-four, was dining with his mess at Peshawar when a message was received describing the outbreak at Meerut, the spread of disaffection to Delhi, the rise of the native soldiers there, and the assassination of many officers and residents at both stations. The assembled officers were for a moment dumbfounded, but no time was lost in arranging a conference of all authorities within reach the following day'. British rule in India.
