'Eat, Drink and Be Merry!', 1932. 'As it was customary on market days for the butchers to have their meals served in common - each man paying his own score - in a room at the sheriff [of Nottingham]'s house, Robin found himself seated there at a long table as the guest of honour, to his secret amusement. The sheriff sat at the head of the table, encouraging his visitors to pass round the wine...The outlaw was the life and soul of the party. "Eat, drink and be merry, my brothers", he cried, "for I shall pay the score".' From "Robin Hood and His Life in the Merry Greenwood", by Rose Yeatman Woolf, illustrated by Howard Davie.
