'Robin Hood Rescues Little John', 1932. Little John '...had ventured into Nottingham some days previously, and, as he had not returned, grave fears were entertained for his safety. [Robin Hood] decided to return at once,...and rode off at a gallop...Robin pulled his horse close to Little John and approached him with his sword upraised as though to slay him. Then, quickly bending down, he cut the bonds and whispered, "Jump up behind me". Without a moment's hesitation, Little John leapt behind his master, who dug his spurs into his mettlesome horse and galloped away, before the onlookers realised what had occurred'. From "Robin Hood and His Life in the Merry Greenwood", by Rose Yeatman Woolf, illustrated by Howard Davie. [Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, London, 1932]
