For Edward now, not the throne of England, but the title of Duke of Windsor'. Edward abdicated because the woman he loved - Wallis Simpson - was a divorcée. For the British establishment, a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective queen consort. She was also American.
