The Chinese Giant, Chang, with his Wife and Attendant Dwarf, 1865. Illustration of Zhan Shichai, who toured the world as Chang the Chinese Giant in the 19th century. His stage name was Chang Woo Gow. He is pictured here to mark his London debut in 1865 at the Egyptian Hall, appearing with Kin Foo, his wife, and performer Chung Mow. Zhan was born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, in the 1840s, with giantism. His height was claimed to be over 8 feet (2.44 m). He left China in 1865 to travel to London where he appeared on stage, later touring around Europe, the U.S. and Australia. Well-travelled, he was a man of exceptional intelligence, speaking at least 10 languages. Zhan died in Bournemouth in 1893.
