Légende

My Nurse and I (Mi Nana y Yo), 1937. Self portrait with the body of a baby, being suckled by a wet nurse with a pre-Columbian funerary mask covering her face. Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) made work inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Her naïve folk art style explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements, and mixed realism with fantasy. She has been described as a surrealist or magical realist. Found in the Collection of Banco de México Diego Rivera Frida Kahlo Museums Trust, Mexico.
