The late Rev. Dr. Candlish, D.D., of Edinburgh, 1873. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. Yerbury of an '...eminent Scottish minister of religion...in 1828...Robert Candlish...was licensed by the Presbytery of Glasgow to be a preacher in the Established Church of Scotland. In the next year he became Minister of St. Andrew's Church, but was removed in 1831 to the parish ministry of Bonhill...where he remained till his call to Edinburgh. He took a leading part in the debates of the General Assembly in 1839; but upon the disruption of the Scottish Church, in 1843, left the Establishment for the Free Church, in which he has since held a position of great authority. He was much concerned in the formation of the Evangelical Alliance in 1845 and 1846...[He] was appointed convener of the Education Committee of the Free Church, and he afterwards filled several offices in the academical institutions founded by that religious denomination...in 1847, he was appointed to the Chair of Divinity in New College, Edinburgh; and...became Principal of that college, in which theological students are trained for the Free Church ministry. He was an impressive preacher and platform speaker, but more especially an able debater and skilful in public business'. From "Illustrated London News", 1873.
