The Bristol Musical Festival: views in Bristol, 1873. Gateway of St Augustine's Abbey; St. John the Baptist Gateway; Exterior, Colston Hall; Staircase, Colston Hall; No. 9, Wine-street, birthplace of Robert Southey; Bristol Cathedral; Old House in Steep St.; tomb of Robert Fitzhardinge, Lord of Berkeley, and his wife Eva; the ancient Black Friars' Monastery or Priory; Gateway leading to the Abbot's lodgings, St Augustine's Abbey. 'The name of Edward Colston, an enterprising merchant of the seventeenth century, who was born and lived in Bristol, is preserved by his munificent foundations of charity, the hospital, school, and almshouse called after him. Colston Hall, in which the meetings of the Musical Festival have been held, is a handsome and commodious modern edifice, opened six years ago'. In 2020, during the Black Lives Matter protests, a statue of slave-owner Edward Colston was thrown into Bristol Harbour by protesters. From "Illustrated London News", 1873.
