Terracotta horses and warriors emerging from the rubble of Pit 1, Lishan, Xian, China. The Terracotta Army is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a water well near the tomb mound of Qin She Huang at Mount Li (Lishan). Qin Shi Huang united the war lords of China and was the first Emperor of China. The warriors, horses and chariots buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE is a form of funerary art to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
