An old engraving showing men working at a hatmaker’s battery used in the production of felt hats. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The battery is a boiler or kettle containing hot water, plus a small quantity of sulphuric acid. The acid aids the fur to ‘felt’ more easily when it adheres to the conical hat bodies. A ‘nap’ is the raised (fuzzy) surface on cloths such as velvet or moleskin, or the surface of felt or beaver pelt. The workers aid this napping process by rubbing with their wooden tools called ‘gloves’.
