Mrs Margaret Thatcher, the UK's first woman Prime Minister, takes the applause in 1980, her first year in office. Education Secretary in Heath's 1970 Government ("Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher", for her proposal to abolish free school milk), she toppled Ted the year after the 1974 defeat and led the Tories in 1979 to the first of three consecutive victories - before being toppled in turn by her protege, John Major.
