Philip Zec Cartoon Daily Mirror 5th June 1944.
There's a long, long trail a-winding...
"Operation Overlord", the landings on the Normandy coast, in June 1944 was a success thanks to the bravery and commitment of thousands of troops. Faced with massive German defensive firepower, many men were cut down before they left the beaches. Those who made it to the cliff tops had to clear enemy positions by grenade, flamethrower and bullet. Once the coast had been secured the fight to liberate Europe and force the German Army back until the Allies and Russia met in Berlin in May 1945 was to last many weary months of hard- fought battle for every yard of soil.
