BEF sign post at Dunkirk Bravery, Endurance, Fortitude!
31st May 1940
As the Nazi machine swept through the Low Countries in May 1940 and into France, the British Expeditionary Force, which was stationed in Europe, was pinned back on the French coast. Thousands of troops were trapped at Dunkirk, Calais and Boulogne with the mighty German Army in front of them and the sea to their rear. They were rescued in the "ïLittle BoatsÍ" operation in which over the period of a week at the end of May 1940 every vessel that could be mustered was sent again and again over the English Channel to evacuate the troops. Despite the GermanÍsÍ attempts to halt the operation, this rag-tag assembly of craft managed to extract over 300,000 men.
