The village of Villers aux Venta destroyed by the Germans during the fighting on the Eastern flank of the first Battle of the Marne which halted the German advance on Paris. After the village was liberated an elaborate series of excavation were discovered behind a house which the German Crown Prince is alledged to have occupied. These excavations were covered with boards and turf, and were constructed to allow the Kaisers son and his staff to escape in times of danger. This picture shows a French intelligence officer exiting the enterance to the burrow. Circa 12th September 1914
