This Belgian soldier was given the job of making wooden crosses to mark the graves of his fallen comrades. Hundreds of thousands of Belgians, military and civilian, lost their lives during the Great War. Like Russia and France, Belgium bore the brunt of the conflict. The country was left in ruins by years of fighting within its borders and even today some of the scars left by the war are still visible. 1914
