Russian transport carts crossing a river in Poland. The Russian army made steady advances into German held territory at the start of the war, particularly in Poland. However, this soon changed. Suicidal tactics by Russian generals quickly handed the advantage to the German army. At the battle of Tannenberg at the end of August 1914, the Russian army suffered a massive defeat. The Russian Second Army was almost totally wiped out and the German Army was handed a huge victory.
