Settlement in the sudd. A tiny settlement consisting of round, thatched huts, located on a riverbank in the sudd, a vast area of swampland formed by the River Nile in southern Sudan. The photographer comments of the area: "If the Nubian desert is accounted one of the world's most barren and inhospitable regions, the sudd must be the dreariest and most featureless". Malakal, Sudan, 1946. Malakal, Upper Nile, Sudan, Eastern Africa, Africa.
