UNIP supporters at an electioneering rally. United National Independence Party (UNIP) supporters disperse following an electioneering rally held two months before Zambian independence. UNIP won the Zambian election of January 1964, but their authority was challenged by Alice Lenshina's Lumpa Church. Violent conflict ensued and in summer 1964, UNIP activists attacked the village of Peshuku, reportedly killing 46 people. Peshuku, Eastern Province, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), August 1964.
