A plaque showing an entrance to the palace of the Oba of Benin (detail), The entrance has a turret on which is a python, king of snakes and messenger of the god Olukun, ruler of the seas. The pillars supporting the turret have representations of the Portuguese. The door is flanked by four attendants, two on each side. Nigeria. Edo. possibly 17th century. Benin.
