Two artificially deformed skulls in a burial urn from a looted cemetery
Légende
Two artificially deformed skulls in a burial urn from a looted cemetery, Skull deformation was common practice in Pre-Columbian Peru and was produced by tight binding of wooden boards to an infant's soft skull. Whether for aesthetic or religious purposes, it does not seem to have caused any physical problems. The skull on the right has a hole between the eyes. It is uncertain whether that was caused post-mortem or whether it could be a sign of sacrifice. Peru. Nazca. 100 - 1400 AD, Middle Horizon and Late Intermediate period. South Peru.
