House of Mourning
Légende
China, A view down an alley in a residential area in Canton, showing a house in mourning. Traditional Chinese custom dictates that when a member of the family passes, a period of mourning has to be observed for up to 100 days, whereupon items are left outside the home to show they are in mourning, or to guide the soul of the deceased back to the house on the seventh day after death. Original manuscript caption: House of Mourning, Canton, circa 1903. 1998/028/1/1/65.
