Moscow, russia, march 7, 2001, mp sergei yushenkov of the union of rightist forces proposes his variant of the russian anthem, five variants were proposed for duma consideration at the first reading, one of them, by sergei mikhalkov, was submitted by the russian president, the duma approved sergei mikhalkov's verses for the national anthem, the words were approved by a vote of 345 to 19, with one abstention, on december 8, last year, the duma approved the music of the former soviet union's anthem as a base for the national anthem of the russian federation.
