Parisien ladies wearing lightning rod hats
Légende
Parisien ladies wearing lightning rod hats, a fad in late eighteenth-century Europe, particularly Paris. The concept that inspired the fashion was that a lightning bolt would strike the protective device instead of the person, and the electricity would travel down a small metal chain into the ground harmlessly. From Les Merveilles de la Science, published 1870.
