Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. created in 1887. A tour of North Wales. 4 Conway Castle and Bridges.—Here, before crossing the river, we have a fine view of the Suspension Bridge, designed by Telford, which is fastened by chains to the grauite rock that the Castle is built upon. This latter is seen in all its grandeur on the other side. Parallel with the Suspension Bridge is the Tubular Bridge, built by Robert Stevenson upon the same pattern as the one over the Menai Straits. The architecture of both bridges is in beautiful harmony with that of the Castle, indeed, the Suspension Bridge might almost be taken for its drawbridge, whilst the whole structure only imparts additional charm to the beauty of the surround¬ing country. Conway Castle was built by Edward I. in 1284, as a security against Welsh insurrection. Speaking of it in its perfect state, Pennant says, “a more beautiful fortress never roseand truly a ramble over its ruins will amply repay and delight the tourist
