Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. No. 1.—GIBRALTAR. |AS the narrow straits of 'Gibraltar form the mouth or entrance of the Mediterranean, of which we propose to speak this evening, we cannot do better than commence this lecture with a description of the celebrated promontory which is the key to that sea, and which, in our hands, gives us the opportunity of keeping watch and ward over every vessel passing in and out of it. Gibraltar itself is a town and fortress situated at the most southern part of Spain, and in the province of Andalusia; and the celebrated rock which rises above was termed by the ancients Galpe, and formed , with a somewhat similar one on the African coast opposite, known as Abyla, the Pillars of Hercules.
