We pass still farther south, and we arrive at Naples, than which there is no city more beatifully situated. The Bay of Naples is considered by all Italians and most foreigners to be the most beautiful hi the world, and the Nepolitans have a saying, “ Vedi Napoli e poi mori ” (See Naples and then die), though strangers may think it is best to go on living and enjoying its beauties. The life here, amongst the natives especially, is one essentially of ease and idleness, and a true Neapolitan never works more than two days in a Week, which is sufficient to keep him for the remaining five, since a little macaroni, some fruit, and cheap wine is all he requires. Then he stretches himself on his hack on the shores of his hay and sleeps or contemplates the blue sky above him.
