Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean. 34- THE ISLAND OF CAPRI FROM THE SEA. The beautiful little island of Capri lies off Sorrento in the Bay of Naples, and is one of the chief excursions from that city. It first became a place of retirement under Tiberius, and has continued so up to the present time ; its beautiful air and its sea-views recommending it .to persons seeking clolce far niente. It possesses a natural curiosity in the shape of what is known as the " blue grotto,” a cavern entered from a portion of the precipitous cliff shown in the accompanying view, and in which everything, including the water, the rocky sides, and the visitors themselves appear of a deep blue colour, a strange fact of which no explanation is forthcoming. The island [B], which takes its name from “ Caprese ” (that “ of the goats ”), was occupied by the English from 1803 to 1808.
