Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian.Social History.No. 1.—Algiers from the Harbour. Of all towns op the Mediterranean between Tunis and Tangiers there is none so calculated to enchant the traveller upon a first view as Algiers, both on account of the beauty of its surroundings and the unfamiliar and striking configuration of the city, which appears to be rising in dazzling radiance from the sea itself. It is difficult to conceive anything more alluring, more fantastically beautiful, than such a view. At the base of the town we see the quays, and a portion of the long line of Boulevards, built by Sir Morton Feto; in the centre we see a little spot of green, the clusters of palms and bamboos in the Place du Gouvernement; above rises, tier upon tier, the flat-roofed houses, dominated by the still massive citadel, the Casbah [B]. On our left we see one of the fine fleet of steamers which ply between Marseilles and Algiers.
