It took place near the ancient village of Cannae, in southern Apulia (nowadays Puglia, Italy), between the armies of Rome and Carthage during the Second Punic War. The African, Gallic, and Celtiberian troops of Hannibal defeated the Romans commanded by Gaius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus. Engraving.
