Pope Pius IX (1792-1878). Born Giovanni Maria Battista Pellegrino Isidoro Mastai Ferretti. Pope of the Catholic Church from June 16, 1846 to his death on February 7, 1878. He was the last sovereign of the Papal States. His Holiness Pius IX carried in the "Sedia gestatoria" (The gestatorial chair) after the general audience held with the Spanish Catholic pilgrims to Rome. Drawing by Pradilla. Engraving.
