British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. It was led by George Strong Nares (1831-1915) and was sent by the British Admiralty to attempt to reach the North Pole. Two ships. "HMS Alert" and "HMS Discovery", captained by Henry Frederick Stephenson, sailed from Portsmouth on May 29, 1875. The expedition failed to reach the North Pole; however the coasts of Ellesmere Island and Greenland were explored. Crew of the "Alert" ship, trapped on ice floe, opening a channel in the icy sea to make way for the ship. Engraving by Rico. La Ilustracion Española y Americana, November 30, 1876.
