The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1929)

The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Paramount, 1929). "Elementary, dear Watson, elementary," utters master sleuth Sherlock Holmes for the first time on film, the line that would ultimately become his trademark. Interestingly, Holmes never used that phrase in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books. This unbelievably rare one sheet is absolutely exquisite, with a finely drawn image of Holmes(Clive Brook), impeccably turned out in a tweed jacket, meticulously scrutinizing a murderous revolver. Brook played Holmes three times: The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes (1932), and as part of Paramount on Parade (1930). However, he is perhaps best remembered for playing opposite Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express (1932). In this installment, Holmes and Watson must once again face down the villainous Professor Moriarty after he begins investigating the murder of a ship's captain and the suspicious disappearance of the dead man's son who is accused of the crime..
