Political alignments were quite different in that era, and the Republican Party maintained strong support from urban labor by backing high tariffs, which kept out of the country cheaper goods to compete with American products. Bryan, being from a western state, had strong support from the silver interests and miners, who wished to see the value of silver raised by pegging it at 1/16 the price of gold..
