The Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, 1826–1920, Contesa de Teba); Winterhalter began an official portrait of Empress Eugénie shortly after her marriage in 1853 to Napoleon III, Emperor of France. Franz Xaver Winterhalter (20 April 1805 – 8 July 1873) was a German painter and lithographer, known for his portraits of royalty in the mid-19th century. His name has become associated with fashionable court portraiture. .
