Spain. 16th century. Revolt of the Comuneros (1550-1521). Maria Pacheco (1496-1531). Spanish Noble woman of the House of Mendoza. When her husband, the chief commoner Juan Lopez de Padilla, fell in the battle of Villalar, she took command and leaded the defence of the city of Toledo against the royalist forces of Charles V until the arrangement of a peaceful surrender of the city six months later. Engraving. 19th century.
