Cowboys prepare to flank a calf that was just dragged to the fire at a spring branding. 'Dragged to the fire' is a term used to describe the action of roping a calf and dragging him by the hoofs where he was roped toward the area where he will be branded, typically across a penned area. There is rarely a real fire where branding irons are placed and instead they are placed in a propane powered fire to be heated.
