Kalpana Chawla directs the EVA from inside the flight deck

(19 November – 5 December 1997) --- Astronaut Kalpana Chawla, mission specialist, monitors the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) of fellow astronauts Winston E. Scott and Takao Doi from her temporary station on the Space Shuttle Columbia’s aft flight deck. Chawla controlled Columbia's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) at this station. Chawla (from her in-cabin post), Doi and Scott shared duties in two separate sessions of EVA during the 16-day United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) mission.
