Stand by the Boys in the Trenches

Stand by the Boys in the Trenches. Artist: Walter Whitehead. A poster from the "strike a pose" family of posters. It features a coal miner, standing with his pick ready and coal lumps at his feet. Next to him is a soldier standing in the same pose with his rifle brandished and barbed wire fence behind him. This poster simply states that workers should mine and labor just as hard as the soldiers overseas. Coal mining was spurred feverishly forward during WWI since it was such a useful fuel for everything from homes to ships. The Fuel Administration produced many spirited and colorful posters which asked Americans to mine more coal and use their coal more efficiently; even going as far as to post instructions on posters on how to fire coal successfully.
