St Nicholas saving three innocents from execution, c1888. The patron saint of Greece and Russia and the model for Santa Claus, St Nicholas (300-399) was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. He was imprisoned by the Roman emperor Diocletian (245-313) but released by Constantine (c275-337). Ilya Yefimovich Repin (5 August [O.S. 24 July] 1844 – 29 September 1930) was a Russian realist painter. He was the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century.
