Owens Valley, California 1943 Editor Roy Takeno reading a copy of the Manzanar Free Press in front of the newspaper office at the Manzanar War Relocation Center in Owens Valley, California. The Manzanar Free Press was first launched in April of 1942 by ex-journalists in what eventually became a relocation center for Japanese-Americans. The first issue, printed on July 22, 1942, stated: "We want to repeat again that the Free Press belongs to the people of Manzanar, that, instead of being merely the mouthpiece of the administration, it strives to express the opinions of the evacuees in the solution of immediate and forseen problems."
