The Rainhill Trials, Liverpool, England, October 1929. An important competition in the early days of steam locomotive railways to decide whether stationary steam engines or locomotives would be used to pull the trains for the nearly completed Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Stephenson's Rocket being the only locomotive to complete the trials won the competition. From Les Merveilles de la Science, published 1870.
