Naval combat in the colosseum in ancient Rome. The first naval battle or Naumachia, was held in the Colosseum in 80AD during its opening ceremony. The circus was flooded and flat bottomed ships, manned by convicts and designed especially for the shallow water staged the battle. From La Ilustracion Iberica, published 1884.
