Assembly of prelates and doctors of the church held in Anagni (Italy) in 1256. Presided over by Pope Alexander IV (1199-1261). St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) defending the mendicant orders, attacked by the University of Paris, and victoriously refuting the claims of the French theologian Guillaume de Saint-Amour (1202-1272). Saint Thomas is depicted from behind, with Saint Bonaventure sitting in the foreground on his right. Engraving by Huyot after a painting by Benozzo Gozzoli (1420-1497).
