Emergency Met Opera Debut
Légende
New York, New York, December 3, 1942 It only happens in the movies, but Marie Wilkins, soprano from Cortland, New York, makes up for her dramatic metropolitan opera debut last night in the title role of "Lakme", when Lily Pons, ill with a cold, was unable to appear at the Monday rehearsal of the opera and Miss Wilkins took the celebrated singer's place. Last night, the young semi-finalist in last year's metropolitan opera auditions received an emergency call from the management to make her debut and turned in a highly creditable performance.
