Floor mosaic from the Basilica of  St. Sophia in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was located in the apse of the first ecclesiastical building on the site of the basilica. First quarter of the 4th century AD. Symbolic depiction of the Christian Paradise. Two cypresses on both sides, intertwined with vine branches (rinceaux). The doves represent the souls of believers. Made of stone and coloured glass tesserae using the opus vermiculatum and opus tesselatum techniques. 2,70 x 2,60 m. National Archaeological Museum. Sofia. Bulgaria.
