On May 24, 1429, Joan of Arc and her troops attacked the English and took control of their camp at Margny. But reinforcements arrived for the English and the French were driven back to Compiegne. What exactly happened is not known, but most of the French troops managed to enter the city. Before Joan could cross the drawbridge, the captain of the French garrison raised the drawbridge and closed the gate. Joan was taken prisoner, as seen here in this engraving dating to 1484 and housed in the National Library in Paris.
